India will become the first country in the world to issue a unique identity number for each of its residents from February 2011 which will allow an online verification, a top official said Wednesday.

The project estimated to cost around Rs.30,000 crore will cover the entire population of the country.

What is Telangana?

Telangana is a region comprising 10 of Andhra Pradesh’s 23 districts.

History

It was a part of the erstwhile Nizam’s princely state of Hyderabad. The region accounts for 119 seats of 294 in the assembly.

When did Telangana merge with Andhra?

In 1948, India put an end to the rule of the Nizams and a Hyderabad state was formed. In 1956, the Telangana part of Hyderabad was merged with then Andhra state (carved out of Madras Presidency in October, 1953). The remaining parts of the Nizam’s empire merged with Karnataka and Maharashtra.

Andhra Pradesh became the first linguistically carved state in the country after Gandhian revolutionary Potti Sreeramulu, on a hunger strike over the issue, died on December 16, 1952.

When did the movement for a separate Telangana kick off?

The first Telangana movement intensified in 1969. There was a distinct difference between Andhra and Telangana regions.

Why people felt feared?

People from Telangana were against merger with Andhra state as they feared they would lose jobs to them.

Cultural differences, too, remain. Under Nizam’s, and before that, under the Qutb Shahi rule, the culture and language in Telangana bore influences of north India. Emphasis on festivals are also different.

What happened in the 1969 agitation?

Primarily a student-driven protest, it turned historical for the number of people who took part in it. Over 350 students were killed in police firing and lathi charge. That’s how the movement collapsed: a result of Indira Gandhi’s masterstroke. P V Narasimha Rao, too, was made CM in 1971 because he was from Telangana region.

What’s K Chandrasekhar Rao’s role?

In the 90s, KCR, then a member of the Telugu Desam Party, was hopeful of a ministerial post in the state government but was made deputy speaker after the 1999 elections. He quit TDP in 2001 to champion the cause of a separate Telangana state and founded Telangana Rashtra Samithi.

All this while, with faster development in the rest of Andhra, a strong feeling was gaining ground in Telangana that it was being exploited and that the region’s surplus was being transferred to finance development in the rest of the state. In 2004 election, Y S Rajasekhara Reddy joined hands with KCR, promising a separate Telangana. But YSR got cold feet and backtracked, triggering resignations of TRS MLAs. KCR quit his Union ministry post.

What’s the stand of other political parties on Telangana?

Congress continues to flip-flop, while TDP, which was against separate Telangana until 2009 election, is now supporting it. BJP, CPI and PRP support Telangana. CPM’s stand still unclear, but by and large, it is opposed to Telangana.

What’s the Hyderabad angle?

Hyderabad, which is within the Telangana region, is a bone of contention between votaries of Telangana and those against it. The issue of AP capital remains a stumbling block in the creation of Telangana.

According to a new survey out from BDO Seidman

Of those who reported plans to use social media,

• 76% are focusing on Facebook,
• 50% on Twitter,
• 14% on MySpace and
• 14% on YouTube.
• 10% percent said they expected to utilize each of those outlets.

As holiday efforts peaked on Black Friday, 4.3% of Facebook users and 2.3% of Twitter users visited the website of a top 500 retailer immediately after perusing the social-networking sites, according to data from Experian Hitwise.

The Food and Drug Administration today announced the publication of the new FDA Food Code, a model code and reference document that provides a scientifically sound technical and legal basis for regulating the retail and food service segment of the food industry.

State, city, county, tribal, and territorial agencies regulate more than 1 million restaurants, retail food stores, and vending and food service operations in institutions such as schools, hospitals, nursing homes, and child care centers.

What FDA Food Code provides

The model FDA Food Code provides the basis for most of those agencies’ licensing, inspection, and enforcement activities, as well as serves as a model for their food statutes, regulations, and ordinances.

The 2009 edition of the Food Code is the seventh full edition published by the FDA. The previous full edition was released in 2005 with a supplement published in 2007.

Significant enhancements to the 2009 FDA Food Code include:

1. Each provision in the FDA Food Code is now designated as a “Priority Item,” a “Priority Foundation Item,” or a “Core Item,” to assist the industry and regulatory community in prioritizing their food safety interventions and their inspections.  These designations are based on a qualitative risk assessment and replace the use of “Critical” and “Non-Critical” designations in previous editions of the FDA Food Code.
2. Cut leafy greens are now included among the foods that require time and temperature control for safety and a new supporting reference document, “Recommendations to Food Establishments for Serving or Selling Cut Leafy Greens,” is summarized in Annex 2.
3. Requirements are added to improve food worker awareness of food allergen concerns in the food service and retail setting.
4. Serving hamburgers and other ground meats in an undercooked form upon a consumer’s request is no longer an option for items offered on a children’s menu.
5. A new definition and criteria are added in a new FDA Food Code section for the non-continuous cooking of foods comprised of raw animal products to address the safety of this cooking method.
6. Several requirements related to the effective cleaning and sanitizing of equipment and surfaces are enhanced or clarified.

What final rule requires?

The final rule requires important new organ-specific warnings and related labeling for over-the-counter (OTC) internal analgesic, antipyretic, and antirheumatic (IAAA) drug products.

The new labeling informs consumers about the risk of liver injury when using acetaminophen and the risk of stomach bleeding when using nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
