Uttar Pradesh Technical University (UPTU)

May 29, 2010

Uttar Pradesh Technical University (UPTU) was established by the Government of Uttar Pradesh on 8th May 2000 vide Act No. 1248(2)XVII-V-I-I-19-2000 Uttar Pradesh Adhiniyam Sankhya 23 of 2000. Under the University Act, ‘Technical Education’ includes programmes of education, research and training in Engineering, Technology, Architecture, Town Planning, Pharmacy, Applied Arts & Crafts and such other programmes and areas that the central Government may in consultation with All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) by notification in Gazette declare.

The University is affiliating in nature and its jurisdiction spans the entire state of U.P. in affiliating B.Tech., M.B.A., M.C.A., B.Arch., B. Pharma., B.H.M.C.T., M.Tech. and Ph.D. programmes in 238 colleges/institutions imparting graduate, postgraduate and doctoral level training in all government and private institutions located all over U.P. in engineering, technology, architecture, pharmacy, hotel management and catering technology as well as M.B.A. and M.C.A. programmes.

U.P. being the largest state of India with an area of around two lacs forty thousand square kilometers and population of more than 165 million people makes UPTU as one of the largest technical universities not only in India but perhaps in Asia. Because of its gigantic size and number of colleges affiliated to it and geographic dispersion, it has been sub-divided into five zones with 45-50 colleges in each zone for the ease of management and facilitating inter-zonal comparison and possible internal competition to enhance quality of teaching-learning processes.

UPTU envisions to facilitate and nurture the quality of technical education and research in its own premises as well as all affiliating institutions. The total number of affiliated colleges was 49 in the year 2000 which has now gone up to 238 and the University is still growing. The task of the UPTU at the moment includes conducting the State level Entrance Examination U.P.-S.E.E. for admission to various programs affiliated to UPTU. Around 2,15,000 aspirants to UPTU take these entrance examination all over U.P. and in parts of Uttrakhand and Delhi. The University conducts central examinations each semester for all the affiliated colleges and institutions and declares results quickly using technology-enabled systems. At present around 150,000 students are enrolled in its various programmes. More than 50,000 students are admitted every year. Medium of instructions and examinations is English.

UPTU is currently located in I.E.T. Campus at Sitapur Road in the Capital of U.P. at Lucknow but is in the process of having its own Headquarter building in its vicinity. Its NOIDA Centre and Regional office is nearing completion to facilitate closer academic and industrial interaction around that zone where a prominent cluster of private affiliated colleges exists.

How to choose the right Engineering College

May 24, 2010

How to choose the right Engineering College?

This is one of the most important decision which students / parents need to take before they choose any college, here are the few points which you should always try to check out before joining any college —

a. Affiliation & Accreditation:

This comes first and foremost. Is the college affiliated with a university which is recognized by industries not only in India  but worldwide. Will colleges abroad recognize the degree when you apply for post-graduation? Be careful with this. Accreditation is the process by which the college conforms to certain standards recognized by institutions and industries. It is a seal of quality.

b. Reputation:

This might sound shallow, but it’s more complex than you think. Look into how long the college has been around and find students who have studied there through Linkedin or other communities. Rankings are usually subjective but getting a hold of a few sources wouldn’t hurt.

c. Infrastructure:

Proper education would only come with the right resources. Have a look at the labs, teacher to student ratio, additional facilities, strong management support. Check to see if labs are shared and that they have the latest equipment.

d. Faculty:

This is huge. Sadly a lot of private colleges will employ your seniors to finish graduating and come back to teach you! What’s the use if there aren’t any experienced hands to give you deeper insight into concepts?

e. Job-skills Training and Practice sessions:

Some colleges have finally started listening to industrialists’ concerns that 80% of India’s graduates don’t possess the skills to be employed. As a result they have started bringing in experts to impart practical training and give them the skills that can actually be used directly at the job given. Internships also fall under this category. PLEASE CHECK FOR THIS. You don’t want to feel like you don’t know anything outside your textbook after 4 years!

f. Location:

A lot of private colleges are set up outside cities or smaller towns because of lesser land prices. As a result many rural students also get admitted into these colleges. While there is nothing wrong about it, choosing a college in the city has its obvious advantages. Access to companies, public exhibitions and any available resource means you have a better perspective.

g. Placements:

Given the recession period, companies are recruiting students very carefully so most colleges are struggling to find partners. But there are still colleges with good links who find jobs for most of their students. Be sure to check for placement record.

h. Personal experience:

With the internet you can find present and former students and get a good idea of the college you want to go to. Keep in mind that even in the same college, one department might be way more efficient and advanced than another one.
